Costs for 2022/2023:

Helium Spin Echo Spectrometer (HeSE)

  • Internal and UKRI funded – £6,179.61 per week
(blocks of one week, theoretical cost of £36.78/hr assuming 24/7 operation)
  • External (under sharing arrangements with other HEIs) – £7,277.63
(blocks of one week, theoretical cost of £43.32/hr assuming 24/7 operation)
  • External (NOT under sharing arrangements with other HEIs) –
contact us to ask for a quote.

Limited free time for sample preparation and characterization – Up to one week on a helium diffraction machine is provided per each week of purchased HeSE beam-time. Following preparation, the sample can be transferred (via air) to the HeSE spectrometer.

Helium Diffractometer

  • Internal and UKRI funded – £3,986.18 per week
(blocks of one week, theoretical cost of £23.73/hr assuming 24/7 operation)
  • External (under sharing arrangements with other HEIs) – £4,478.59 per week
(blocks of one week, theoretical cost of £26.66/hr assuming 24/7 operation)
  • External (NOT under sharing arrangements with other HEIs) –

Full Service (Measurement / Analysis)

The package is designed to support users who may not have the personnel to deploy on a measurement, but would still like to research using helium scattering techniques. The service is sold in blocks of one week. However, as a guideline, preparations for a standard experiment would take up-to two weeks (inc. literature review and preliminary calculations to design the measurement), a standard experiment would take 3 weeks (1 week for sample preparation, 2 weeks for dynamics measurements), and analysis would take one-four months, depending on the degree of analysis. The analysis package could include analysis using any of the following methods:

  1. Analytical models
  2. Monte-Carlo simulations
  3. Molecular Dynamics simulations
  4. Work with theoreticians (e.g. experts in Density Functional Theory).
  • Internal and UKRI funded – £1,472.22 per week
  • External (under sharing arrangements with other HEIs) – £1,772.65

Consumables

The costing covers all consumables required for the experiment, apart from samples which are not available from the CAS centre stock. Depending on the interest of the CAS centre, and for HeSE beam-time blocks of 3 weeks and above, the cost of samples can be shared with the CAS centre.

Internal services

  • Leak Tester rentals – £50/day

General comments regarding the costings

Usage rates are anticipated to rise by 5% each subsequent year.

We ask requests for services to be accompanied with an appropriate active grant number, cost-centre or Purchase Order. Charges do not include VAT.
